Growing a Community Garden

Here at Exeter Connect, it is great that we get to meet so many local groups, hear their ideas, and see them grow.

One of these is St Thomas Community Garden, a small garden with a selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. One of their aims is to grow food that could be supplied to the St Thomas Community Larder, as well as being keen to engage local residents.

The group approached us for support earlier this year, looking for some advice on fundraising, as well as around governance. Funds were also needed to buy certain materials and equipment such as another compost bin and a chalkboard to leave messages for park users about what is happening in the garden.

Working alongside one of our Development Workers, the group made a successful application for a Ward Grant from Exeter City Council, and are also moving towards constituting.

Another group have donated some seeds and they are exploring how they can involve local residents, as well as finding more volunteers and group members.

If you also have an idea or project you’re trying to grow, our team is always happy to have a chat about how we could support you.

You can also sign up to the Exeter Community Growers’ Network to hear more about greening and growing initiatives across Exeter.
